So what's the difference between Life Coaching and
Counselling, then?
The official answer is that counselling looks to the
past and life coaching looks to the future, but actually the line between the two
isn't always as clearly defined as that. It can be blurry . . . but let's take a
closer look.
One of the most common purposes
for life coaching is career direction. When working life becomes unsatisfactory for
whatever reason, or maybe after redundancy, a fresh approach may be desirable.
Coaching can be helpful in many other areas of life, too. It often happens that the
area of your life you think you need to focus on, turns out not to be the area that
demands the most urgent attention, after all! Life coaching helps you to
prioritise.
There are processes to work
through which clarify the parts of your life that are fine, as distinct from those
which could be improved - perhaps work is going well, but social life is a
disaster. Could be the family is missing out. Maybe work and social commitments
take up so much time that your health is suffering and you're feeling stressed . .
. the permutations are endless.
The thing is, past and future are
linked and run together, but a clear vision can show where you might best turn your
attention right now. Step by step, you and your coach can work it out
together.
With a Life Coach who is also a
trained counsellor you can, if it would be helpful, have the advantage of
counselling support either before, or alongside, your coaching.
