What are the uses and/or
benefits of counselling for me?
"Why would anybody need
counselling?", is a question sometimes asked.
"Why not just keep a stiff upper
lip and get on with your life? Counselling just makes things worse."
Yes, that can be true . . . if we
just dwell on the past and blame others for where we are!
Counselling is not about dumping
responsibility somewhere else - it's about learning to take responsibility for
ourselves and getting into the driving seat of our own lives. It's about being less
re-active and more pro-active. It's about finding out what it takes to move
on.
However, in order to take
responsibility for ourselves, we really need to understand why our lives are the
way they are. Only when we acknowledge the way things are right now can we do
something about them and move on - only then can we change the situations we wish
to change and find the means to 'make life work' for us in better and happier
ways. How can we do that? By working things through with a trained
counsellor, in totally safe and confidential surroundings.
